Beyond the Gym: My Deep Dive into Motivation, Consistency, and the "Elite Formula" on The Athletes Compass
I recently had the incredible honor of being a guest on the podcast, The Athletes Compass! It was a powerful, practical conversation where we dove deep into the core elements of what creates sustainable growth, not just for elite athletes, but for every person trying to live their best life.
The episode was about shifting the focus from short-term motivation to long-term, value-driven purpose, and how a few simple disciplines can keep you on track amidst chaos.
Here are the key frameworks and concepts we unpacked:
The Engine for Long-Term Growth
The foundation of our discussion was built on three core pillars: Motivation, Consistency, and Self-Reflection. I shared what I call the "Flywheel" Framework:
Motivation → Discipline → Reflection
This isn't a linear path, but a continuous cycle. Initial motivation drives discipline, and disciplined action gives you something concrete to reflect on. This reflection then deepens your purpose, which refuels your motivation—creating an upward spiral of perpetual progress.
Beating Perfectionism with the Elite Formula
One of the biggest obstacles we discussed, especially for high-achievers, is perfectionism, which often leads to an "all-or-nothing" mindset. To combat this and ensure consistency, I shared my Elite Formula—a simple, scalable mindset framework:
Elite (A+): This is the perfect, ideal session (e.g., full 60-minute lift, perfect recovery).
Exceed (B): A great, solid effort. You hit the main points and executed well.
Elevate (C / Minimum Effective Dose): This is the most important level. It’s showing up even when life is chaotic, stressed, or sick. It’s the 15-minute bodyweight circuit or the walk instead of the run. Consistency beats intensity, and the 'C' is your secret weapon to never breaking the chain.
Why Reflection is the Most Underrated Discipline
Most athletes focus solely on training, but they completely skip the crucial step of reviewing their effort. We talked about how to make reflection structural and meaningful using tools like ESP (Effort, Success, Progress):
Effort: Where did you apply true effort this week?
Success: What did you do well? (Focus on wins, no matter how small).
Progress: What will you focus on next to move forward?
By pausing to reflect, we shift from novelty-driven motivation to a deep, value-based purpose, which is where true resilience is built.
Applying Coaching to Life and Family
The principles of performance coaching don't stop at the gym door. We discussed how movement is the foundation for energy, stress resilience, and emotional health, and how simple systems are the key to unlocking more of our human potential.
We also touched on the profound impact of the Power of Positive Coaching, especially with youth athletes and in parenting. Encouragement and feedback focused on what they did well yield far better results than constant correction—a lesson that applies equally to how we lead ourselves and our teams.
