Embracing Adversity and Building Leadership: Lessons from Chris Streveler on The Human Athlete Podcast
On a recent episode of The Human Athlete, we had the privilege of sitting down with Chris Streveler—former professional quarterback turned mentor and coach. Streveler’s unconventional path from undrafted college player to CFL champion and NFL leader is not only a story of athletic perseverance but also a blueprint for tackling adversity, embracing leadership, and redefining purpose after sport.
An Unconventional Journey
Streveler’s football career defied expectations from the outset. Undrafted out of South Dakota, he earned a shot in the Canadian Football League, joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Far from a linear climb, his path was marked by adaptability, risk-taking, and the willingness to do whatever was needed for the team—including returning to the CFL after a stint in the NFL.
“It’s definitely a unique journey… you just don’t see that a lot, especially with quarterbacks who spent four years down in the NFL.” — 01:16
His return to Winnipeg after five years was made even more special by reconnecting with former teammates who had grown alongside him through life’s milestones.
“I go back in 2024, half the team has kids, most of the guys are married… just seeing guys grow up and then getting to grow up alongside them… was just such a special time for me.” — 04:33
The Power of Team, Community, and Leadership
For Streveler, football is much more than a sport—it is a platform for authentic relationships, collective effort, and selfless leadership. He believes the camaraderie found in a locker room is difficult to replicate elsewhere, and that the true value of the game lies in pursuing a shared goal together.
“I love the team aspect of football. That’s why I do what I do. That’s why I got no problem putting my body on the line. Because when I tell guys I love them, you know, I genuinely do.” — 07:16
Transitioning to the NFL presented new challenges. With constant roster movement and uncertainty, Streveler learned that leadership is earned through consistency rather than title.
“You just have to show up and control the things you can control, which is your effort and your attitude. When you do that, people respect that.” — 08:31
Redefining Leadership Off the Field
One of the greatest challenges of Streveler’s career came in the form of back-to-back ACL injuries. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, he focused on finding new ways to contribute and support his teammates.
Whether charting plays, offering encouragement, or maintaining a positive presence, he discovered that leadership extends beyond performance on the field.
“When you go through adversity and you still show up for work and you still bring a positive energy and positive attitude… people see that. To me, that’s a form of leadership. It doesn’t always have to be on the field.” — 12:20
His philosophy is straightforward but powerful: control what you can, maintain a positive mindset, and always look for ways to add value.
Building the Next Generation
Today, as co-founder of Ground Up Quarterback in Arizona, Streveler is dedicated to helping young athletes develop both their skills and character.
His coaching approach goes far beyond football fundamentals. Through mentorship, virtual training, classroom sessions, and personal development, he emphasizes leadership, goal setting, resilience, and accountability.
“I gave the guys probably an hour-long talk a couple weeks ago just about leadership and what that means to command a huddle and how do we start our off-season in the right way.” — 30:07
For Streveler, learning to navigate adversity is one of the most important lessons an athlete can learn—because those same lessons apply throughout life.
The Importance of Support and Community
Throughout his journey, Streveler credits much of his success and optimism to the support system around him. Family, friends, mentors, and teammates have played a vital role in helping him navigate challenges and stay grounded.
“It always just kind of seems like a couple people just, like, reach out and just, like, check in… and I just try to be that for other people, too.” — 17:49
His commitment to supporting others reflects the same values that have guided him throughout his career.
Lasting Lessons for All of Us
While Streveler’s story is rooted in athletics, its lessons extend far beyond sports. His commitment to selfless leadership, daily discipline, resilience, and meaningful relationships offers valuable insights for anyone facing challenges in life, business, or personal growth.
“Work hard and be good to people… I’ve always tried to do that. I never burn bridges. Even if I feel like I got done dirty, I will always shake a hand and hold my head high, because you just never know what’s coming back around.” — 22:39
